• Fall Leadership Conference:
    Saturday, November 9, 2019

    This conference is for UAB students seeking to enhance leadership skills, connect with peers, and network with professional staff. The conference will take place in the Hill Student Center on November 9, 2019, from 9:00 AM and until 3:00 PM. The conference will offer a variety of session topics and activities focused on critical thinking and problem solving, social responsibility and practical leadership and management.

    Learning Outcomes

    As a result of participating in the conference, students will be able to:

    Practical Leadership & Professionalism
      – Identify and define personal leadership values and/or behaviors
      – Outline actionable next steps for co-curricular engagement and involvement to strengthen career readiness

    Social Responsibility
      – Recognize barriers to equality and inclusion and outline means for dismantling them

    Critical Thinking & Problem Solving
      – Understand the role of personal experience and observation in decision making
      – Identify personal assumptions and seek out alternative perspectives

  • We need people like you to help make this day beneficial for all of our student participants. Please consider presenting a 50-minute workshop to help us achieve our learning outcomes. Presentation proposals are now being accepted. Presentations should align with one of the three learning tracks listed below:

    Practical Leadership & Professionalism
      – Identify and define personal leadership values and/or behaviors

    You can submit your presentation proposal by clicking here. Priority is given to proposals received before October 4 and those with student leader co-presenters. The deadline to submit a proposal is Friday, October 11.

  • Fredi Lajvardi

    Fredi Lajvardi is a nationally recognized STEM Educator and the subject of the Critically Acclaimed Documentary Underwater Dreams and major motion picture Spare Parts, as well as the IMAX film Dream Big.

    A significant contributor to the increasing popularity of STEM subjects nationwide, high school science teacher Fredi Lajvardi has engaged, motivated, and challenged students by altering their perspective on science and introducing them to the field of robotics for more than two decades. Lajvardi drew national attention in 2004 when he entered his high school team in a university level national underwater robotics competition, where they not only proved their skills and ability to compete, but they placed first, defeating leading universities, including MIT. Now captured in the acclaimed documentary, Underwater Dreams, selected by President Obama to screen at the White House in honor of National Robotics Week, their story was also adapted into the major motion picture, Spare Parts. With an incredible story and a spirited passion for teaching, Lajvardi offers valuable and inspiring insight on leadership, fostering teamwork, sparking creativity and helping individuals realize and maximize their potential.

    Come out to UAB LEAD: Fall Leadership Conference to hear Fredi Lajvardi recount his experience in reforming his high school by inspiring students to succeed. Lajvardi exhibits model leadership skills by illustrating the need to embrace diversity and invest in people to help them realize their potential. His story inspires real life encouragement to maximize your own potential and work together to solve complex problems.
