  • Aaron L. Lamar, Jr. Student Leadership Scholarships

    Scholarship Winner

    Aaron L. Lamar, Jr. Student Leadership Scholarships is a non-renewable scholarship established in an effort to honor Aaron Lamar, Jr., Ed.D., who served UAB for 25 years as the Associate Vice President and Dean of Students. Dr. Lamar was responsible for the growth and development of many programs and activities at the University. While Dr. Lamar certainly valued scholarship, he greatly valued the total development of students through their involvement in co-curricular and community activities. He also valued the diversity of the collegiate environment, believing that this was integral to the education process.

    This scholarship is distributed annually by The Office of Student Involvement and Leadership.
    One recipient is awarded each Fall; the award amount varies between $1,000 and $2,500.

    Eligibility Requirements:

    • Be currently enrolled in a degree seeking program at UAB
    • Be classified as a Sophomore, Junior, or Senior undergraduate student (senior students must be returning as a full-time UAB student the following Fall)
    • Have earned a minimum, overall GPA of 2.5 in course work prior to the time of application and be in good academic standing
    • Have demonstrated active participation and leadership in extracurricular and community activities
    • Active participation in organizations and activities promoting diversity is an important element in the application and selection process

    Application Requirements:

    This scholarship application is made available through BSmart. The application opens in October and closes in January. The following must be included in the BSmart General Scholarship Application to be fully considered:

    • Resume (highlighting campus involvement/leadership, community service, and student employment if applicable)
    • 2 letters of recommendation from a person who can comment on your leadership on campus and/or in the UAB/Birmingham community.
    • Essay demonstrating leadership in the co-curricular or community activities. Participation in organizations and activities promoting diversity should be outlined in the essay.

    Applicants being considered for this award will be required to interview with members of the selection committee. Applicants will be notified if selected for an interview.

  • Emerging Leaders Scholarship

    The UAB Emerging Leaders Scholarship was established in order to assist deserving UAB students who demonstrate outstanding leadership abilities and potential for involvement. This fund was established by gifts made in honor of Tony Dew, former UAB Associate Dean and Director of Student Development, who participated in the 1996 Boston Marathon. This scholarship is expected to be of significant and enduring value to the lives and careers of the students who benefit from it and the lives of all those they influence while serving as leaders on campus and in their careers.

    This scholarship is distributed annually by The Office of Student Involvement and Leadership. Up to five recipients are awarded each Fall; the award amount varies between $1,000 and $5,000. This award is an annual award; recipients of the scholarship may not apply for the award in subsequent years.

    Eligibility Requirements:

    • Must be a currently enrolled undergraduate student in a degree seeking program
    • Must have completed a minimum of 24 credit hours at UAB prior to application
    • Must have earned a 2.5 cumulative GPA in completed coursework
    • Demonstration of leadership skills and potential for leadership success
    • Preference will be given to Alabama residents and graduates of Alabama high schools

    Application Requirements:

    This scholarship application is made available through BSmart. The application opens in October and closes in January. The following must be included in the BSmart General Scholarship Application to be fully considered:

    • Resume (highlighting campus involvement/leadership, community service, and student employment if applicable)
    • Two letters of recommendation, one of the letters must be from a faculty or staff member who has witnessed the applicant's leadership qualities and potential for success
    • One page essay outlining the applicant's leadership skills, proven abilities, as well as potential for leadership success.

    Selected applicants will be required to interview with the Emerging Leadership Scholarship Selection Committee. Applicants will be notified via email if selected for interviews.

  • Camille Armstrong Endowed Scholarship

    The Camille Armstrong Memorial Scholarship Endowment was established to award deserving undergraduate African-American students at UAB considering the field of law. The scholarship is named for a UAB political science senior who was tragically killed in an automobile accident on March 11, 1986. The scholarship fund was established in 1987 to honor the memory of Camille and to preserve the spirit of the life she shared with us. The students who benefit from this scholarship should strive to create a lasting contribution to UAB’s campus through their leadership and professionalism to commemorate Ms. Armstrong’s accomplishments.

    This scholarship is distributed by The Office of Student Involvement and Leadership. Three applicants will receive a scholarship offer; award amounts range from $1000 to $3500 and is distributed each Spring. Recipients of the Camille Armstrong Memorial Scholarship Endowment are also eligible to receive other forms of student financial aid. Renewal of the award will be at the discretion of the selection committee, but the recipients must re-apply. Recipients will be announced at the Camille Armstrong Memorial Scholarship Step Show. The event is sponsored by The Black Student Awareness Committee at UAB.

    Eligibility Requirements:

    • Be a full-time or part-time African-American/Black undergraduate student
    • Be currently enrolled in a degree seeking program at UAB that leads to 1st baccalaureate degree
    • Be in good academic standing with UAB and demonstrate solid academic promise, with at least a 3.0 UAB cumulative GPA
    • Be classified as a junior or senior and have attended UAB for at least three consecutive academic terms
    • Have demonstrated active participation in UAB organizations and involvement in community activities
    • Have a career goal in the field of law (Police Officer, Judge, Lawyer, etc.)
    • Preference is given to students that are members of the Pre-Law Society at UAB

    Application Requirements:

    This scholarship application is made available through BSmart. opens in November and closes in December of each academic year. The following must be included in the Bsmart General Scholarship Application to be fully considered:

    • Resume (highlighting campus involvement/leadership, community service, and student employment if applicable)
