Filling out this form is the most important step in paying for college because the FAFSA gives UAB a complete and official calculation of your Expected Family Contribution (EFC) —and knowing that figure allows us to calculate your financial need for UAB. Your need might be higher than you might estimate, meaning you might be eligible for more assistance than you anticipated. When you complete the FAFSA, you are also then eligible to be considered for a variety of assistance programs with just that one form.

- Apply early. When you visit the FAFSA site, you’ll see forms for two academic years. It’s important to pick the one that covers the next academic year. For example, if you want assistance for the year that includes fall 2011 through summer 2012, complete the form for 2011-2012. The earlier you complete it, the more options you will have. Submit the FAFSA by February 1 to allow enough processing time. You will receive priority consideration for all programs if UAB receives your application by March 1.
- You must be admitted to UAB to formally receive a notice of financial assistance.
- Men between the ages of 18 and 25 must register with Selective Service to be eligible for financial assistance.
- Read and follow all instructions on the FAFSA site to make sure you provide accurate information.
- You and your parent must sign the FAFSA using your pin numbers. If you are a new applicant and you or your parents don't have a PIN, request one at 222.pin.edu.gov. If you have questions about the PIN process call 1-800-433-3243.
- You should reapply each year whether or not you receive financial assistance. Awards are given annually, and because situations and programs change, your eligibility for assistance in future years may also change.
- Once you have submitted your application, you can check your application status online by clicking the related link for Applicants.
- Once your FAFSA is processed, both you and UAB will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR) which lists your official expected family contribution.
- While you are waiting for your SAR, you can go ahead and submit the UAB Forms located on our website under "Complete the UAB Forms." In fact, it is a good idea to do so because it may help speed up the financial assistance process.
