Adventure Awaits!
Come get outside with UAB Adventure Recreation! We will be offering a plethora of trip opportunities over the next 12 months. We will be doing everything from rafting down the Ocoee River to backpacking in the Sonoran Desert. There are trips for all experience and skill levels. All trips have food provided and two experienced guides to make sure that we have a fun and safe experience in the outdoors. Appalachian Trail Backpacking - March 11 - March 18
This trip will be a backpacking trip on the Appalachian trail for 7 days. We will be climbing over mountains and having views that there are no other ways to see except on foot. This trip will be strenuous and involve carrying 30 + pounds of gear several miles a day.

This will be a canoeing trip partned with Jacksonville State University!

Camping Providence Canyon - March 24 - March 26
On this trip, we will be exploring Providence Canyon State Park in southwest Georgia. This canyon is the result of unsustainable farming techniques in the area that resulted in mass erosion. The erosion has created 150-foot-tall cliffs. We will also be touring the white oak pastures farm. This is a regenerative farm that tries to practice sustainable and ethical farm practices.

Mulberry Whitewater Kayak Trip - April 1
We will whitewater kayak the mulberry river. It is primarily class I and class II whitewater with a class III rapid. The run will take about an hour and a half and is located about an hour north of Birmingham.

Other important details: Once the initial 8 spots are taken there is an opportunity to increase the group size but the cost will increase due to renting equipment from an outside vendor.

Backpacking Trip to Sipsey - April 14 - April 16
This is a backpacking trip to the Sipsey wilderness area. All food and gear are provided we will be backpacking Friday and Saturday Night and leaving the wilderness area on Sunday. Sipsey is the largest wilderness area in Alabama and the oldest east of the Mississippi River. We will also hike by one of the last stands of virgin forest in the state of Alabama. There are unique rock formations formed by the multiple rivers and streams that run through this area. There will be ample time to try your hand at fishing if you desire.

Whitewater Rafting and Camping at Chattooga River - May 19 - May 21
This will be a weekend camping and rafting on the Chattooga River. The Chattooga River holds a wild and scenic designation which protects the banks of the river which gives you the feeling of truly being in the wilderness. The river is consider to be one of the whitewater classics of the south east and will give you the opportunity to experience class IV rapids. We will camp in the nearby national forest and provide you with all the meals and camping equipment that you need.

Cahaba Canoe Float - June 24
Come Canoe the Cahaba River and see the Cahaba Lillies in their peak bloom. We will go to Bibb Couny and float a beautiful section of river through the Cahaba National Wildlife Refuge. This will be an all day event feel free to bring your lunch and a fishing rod.

Yellowstone National Park - July 14 - July 24
All-inclusive guided trip to Yellowstone National Park. Come spend 10 days with the UAB in America’s first national park. The wildlife and volcanic activity make it like no place on Earth. You will see elk, buffalo, antelope, and if you're lucky you may catch your first glimpse at a grizzly or grey wolf. Book your flight to Bozeman Montana where we will pick you up and take you to the park. All camping and park fees will be covered and we will hit all the hot spots in the park such as Old Faithful, the Grand Prismatic Spring, and the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone.

Climbing at Sandrock - August 12
This will be an outdoor climbing trip to one of the local favorites. It coincides with the end of our fall learn to climb course so that we can offer our students the opportunity to use what they have learned outside. This trip is also open to any of our members and students at UAB regardless of if you took the course. Sandrock climbing trip takes place at Cherokee Rock Village which is located on top of a mountain overlooking a lake.

Other important details: Climbing is inherently dangerous, we will set up multiple top ropes and for those who have taken the learn to climb course, we will offer them the opportunity to complete their first lead climb outdoors. If you have not taken our learn to climb course you may not lead routes. All climbs that we lead will than be available to top rope.

Trips leaving on Friday will leave as soon as possible. A departure time will be agreed upon by the group during the pre-trip meeting to accommodate all participants CLASS schedules. -

Adventure Recreation trips fill up fast, so make sure you reserve your spot today! All of our trips are open to anybody who wants to go. You can register in person at in the Adventure Recreation Rental Center or at the Membership Desk, over the phone by calling 205-996-4913, online through our Membership Portal, or on our membership app.
Registration is only secured after full payment for the trip has been made. Partial deposits can only reserve a spot on the trip until it has completely filled with full-paying participants.

University Recreation's Adventure Recreation reserves the right to cancel a trip or program due to inclement weather, natural disasters, or extenuating circumstances. In the event a trip or program must be cancelled, a full refund will be issued to all registered participants.

75% of payment will be refunded 14 days or more prior to trip departure. 50% of payment will be refunded 13-4 days prior to trip departure. NO refund will be granted less than 3 days prior to the trip departure.
Trip refund policy may vary on larger trips that require logistics to be secured in full in well in advance of the trip. Check with the Adventure Recreation staff if you feel like you may need a refund. -
