UAB University Recreation has implemented a modified operational plan to re-open its facilities, programs and services in a way that puts the health and safety of our staff and members as the main focus in the Re-entry process. This includes modification to our hours of operations, extensive cleaning protocols, facility spaces, and enhanced and updated policies and procedures.  

Please be sure to read and familiarize yourself with the UAB University Recreation’s Re-entry Plan, below, in its entirety. It provides important information and explains the changes and updates in our policies and procedures in response to COVID-19.

All policies and procedures will be strictly enforced. The URec team is committed to providing you with quality and inclusive spaces and programs while minimizing the risk of exposure.

In order for our team to safely serve everyone, we ask YOU to follow the all University Recreation’s Policies and Procedures while in the facility. Only TOGETHER we can reduce the spread of COVID-19 and remain open. The UAB URec’s Re-entry Plan follows the University of Alabama System Safety Protocols, takes into account CDC recommendations, and complies with state and local guidelines and recommendations.

Social Distancing and Mask Requirements

Mask up Blazers! In alignment with UAB’s mask policy and due to the recent surge of COVID-19 cases and updated CDC guidance, all individuals must wear a face covering at all times while at the Campus Recreation Center. There are limited times when individuals can be unmasked. Individuals can briefly unmask while actively showering, eating or drinking if a minimum of 6 feet of social distancing can be maintained.

Youth Programs participants are subjects to UAB Youth Protection policies and are required to socially distance and wear masks at all times.

Masks and social distancing are required for patients in the Athletic Training Room in accordance with UAB Student Health and UAB Medicine standards.

Area and Services Specific Modified Policies

University Recreation has implemented a plan to mitigate the risk of exposure and spread of COVID-19 by implementing capacity limits to each area of the Campus Recreation Center. Some areas may require reservations. URec has also increased the efforts to ensure; our staff are routinely disinfecting and sanitizing each machine with CDC approved supplies. An increased amount of spray bottles and cleaning towels have been placed around the facility for our members to assist with keeping our facility safe and clean. With the exception of water bottle re-filling stations, all water fountains have been turned off. Members are encouraged to bring their own water bottles. Members are encouraged to follow proper personal hygiene and are expected to stay home if they are sick

Aquatics Center

  • All individuals must wear a mask at all times unless they are actively engaging in water activities.
  • Unmasked individuals must remain at least 6 feet apart while in the pool or the spa.
  • A lifeguard will request proof of reservation as you enter the pool deck area.
  • Mask is required anywhere on the pool deck.

Members may check out the following equipment:

Swimming Lap Lanes

  • Limit of 1 person per lap lanes 1-5; lap swimming/workout only; not for recreational use.
  • Pool lanes must be reserved for use online or through the UAB Campus Recreation Mobile App to enter the pool. (How to reserve a swimming lap lane)
  • A lifeguard will request proof of reservation as you enter the pool deck area.
  • Lane reservations are available on the hour for a 45-minute time block to allow for cleaning between use.
  • Reservations open 48 hours in advance.
  • Please bring your own equipment.
  • We request patrons take soap showers prior to pool use.

*This area is a subject to a different occupancy limit when utilized for scheduled academic or URecprogramming.

Spa

  • Maximum Occupancy:3
  • All users must stay in designated areas within the spa to maintain social distancing at all times.

Leisure Area

  • Maximum Occupancy: 7
  • No reservation required, first-come-first-serve basis.

Sauna

  • Maximum Occupancy: 1

Gender Specific Locker Rooms

  • All individuals must wear a face covering at all times unless they are actively showering and maintaining 6 feet of social distancing.

  • The track is for walkers and runners only; other use of the track is prohibited.
  • Bringing fitness equipment from fitness center to the track is strictly prohibited.

How do I reserve space?

Reservations for swimming lap lanes, racquetball courts, and Studio V may be made online or on the UAB Campus Recreation Mobile App (instructions below):

Reserving Space - Online System

Using the Online System

  1. Sign into the Online Portal. Please note that you will need to use your UAB URec credentials – NOT YOUR BLAZER ID. If you need to create credentials please contact Membership Team at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.or 205-934-82242.
  2. Once you are logged in click “Reservations"
  3. Click “Reservations” again
  4. Choose the type of space you are looking to reserve
  5. In the small box that pops up choose the date and duration for your reservation. Reservations may be made no earlier than 48 hours in advance.
  6. Using the List view choose the time and space that works best for you.Click “Add to Cart”. After clicking the "Add to Card”, Booking Details will appear, choose “Continue"
  7. Choose the name of the member who is booking the space
  8. Click “Continue to Cart"
  9. A “Thank You" message will appear to confirm the booking

Note: You can view your reservations by visiting the “Member Information" section on the home page and choosing “Account Summary". Scroll down to the “Current Reservations" section to view bookings.To cancel click specific reservations and then choose “Cancel Schedule"

  3. Choose “Bookings" on the bottom of the screen
  4. Choose the day and time you are looking for and click “Next". Reservations may be made no earlier than 48 hours in advance.
  5. Select “Reservations” option from the “Select Category” menu
  6. Select the general location you would like to reserve from the “Select Service” menu
  7. Select the specific resource (location) or select “All" to see the availability for all resources (specific locations) in the general location
  8. Select the duration of reservation
  9. Click “Search"
  10. Choose the time slot that you would like to reserve and click “book" on the next page
  11. Choose the name of the member who is booking the space and click “next"
  12. A “Thank You" message will appear to confirm the booking.You will also be able to add this booking to your calendar

Note: You can view your reservation on the home page of the app by choosing the different days from the calendar list towards the top of the screen.To cancel, click the reservation in this calendar view and choose “Cancel"

Outdoor Rental Center

Rental equipment modified operations

We are excited to offer curbside pickup for outdoor equipment rentals through our Outdoor Pursuits Equipment Rentals Center. Renters must submit a Rental Request and arrange a time to pick-up and drop-off the outdoor equipment. Submission of this rental request does not guarantee a rental. You will receive a confirmation email within 24 hours confirming your rental, pick-up time, and drop-off time.

How To Reserve your Equipment

  1. Check out our equipment and pricing on our Outdoor Rental Equipment page.
  2. Submit your Rental Request Form Online
  3. Wait up to receive your rental confirmation from the Outdoor Pursuits team within 24 hours
  4. The Outdoor Pursuits team will call you in order to process the rental payment over the phone
  5. Arrive at the Outdoor Pursuits Rental Center located in the back of the campus recreation center at your pre-approved pick-up time
    1. Equipment will be brought out to your car.
  6. Renters must sign the rental agreement form before equipment can be brought out to the car
  7. Equipment can be placed in the truck by or staff, or you can choose to put it in yourself once the equipment has been brought outside to your vehicle
    1. *Outdoor Pursuits staff cannot help load boats on the tops of vehicles
    2. **Outdoor Pursuits can provide padding on a limited basis
    3. ***Outdoor Pursuits cannot provide any tie-down equipment
  8. Enjoy your time outdoors with the equipment!

Membership Modifications

Membership Re-start information

We wanted to thank everyone for their patience, as we’ve dealt with the aftermath of the COVID-19 outbreak and the Re-entry to Campus process. In our Member Newsletter, sent on April 6, 2020, we communicated how we plan to move forward with everyone’s membership starting on August 17, 2020.

Members who paid in full:

Members who paid for a 1, 3, or 12 month membership in full prior to August 17, 2020, their expiration dates have been extended by the number of days that the Campus Recreation Center was closed for.

Members who paid monthly via Debit/CreditCard Deductions:

Members who paid for their membership via monthly credit card deductions prior to August 17, 2020, were not charged via credit card billing for the months of April, May, June, July, and August of 2020. Due to the closure of Campus Recreation Center beginning on March 15, 2020, members who were billed in March were credited the second half of August to reflect March’s 2020 payment. Debit/Credit card monthly billing has resumed as of September 2020.

Members who paid monthly via Payroll Deductions

Payroll deductions have not been processed since March 2020 and University Recreation has transitioned to Debit/Credit card billing only.

Members who were payroll deducted prior to March 16, 2020, had their memberships extended to reflect the amount of days the member had already been deducted prior to the closure of the Campus Recreation Center. Additionally, those members who failed to submit a Debit/Credit card on file prior to their expiration date, resulted in termination of their membership. Members who wish to rejoin, please visit Member Services or sign up online.

Non-Prime Memberships

All Non-Prime members (Early Bird and Night Owl) have access to the Campus Recreation Center Monday through Friday from 6am – 3pm with unlimited access on the weekends.

Minor Members (ages 5-18)

Beginning Sunday, August 1st, 2021, Minor Memberships that are currently in the "Frozen" status due to COVID restriction will have access into the facility moving forward. Billing for Monthly Minor Memberships that have not been cancelled, will resume August 2021 as well.

Please note that due to the COVID-19 closure and previous restrictions, UAB University Recreation did not process any Debit/Credit Card billing for Monthly Minor Memberships from April 2021 through July 2021.

*In accordance with UAB's Campus policies, all individuals who are not fully vaccinated against COVID-19 are required to wear a face mask indoors - this includes ALL minors under the age of 12, who are not eligible to receive the vaccine. We Support Contactless Transactions

Member now have the option to use a variety of contactless mobile payments* such as Apple Pay and Samsung Pay or Credit Cards that support contactless payments. Contactless payments are encouraged as they help minimize touch points and are used by waiving your mobile device or your credit card over our payment terminals.

*Contactless payments are currently unavailable for ProShop or PowerZone transactions.

Due to the current circumstances surrounding our re-opening members may freeze their membership for longer than six months until further notice.

Cancellation Policy Update

In order to cancel a membership, member must fully complete and submit the UAB University Recreation Cancellation Request Form. Once the form is submitted and processed, your membership will cancel at the end of the month and you will no longer be charged.
Members who are unable to complete the online Cancellation Form may stop by Member Services and cancel their membership in person.

Guest pass sales have been discontinued until further notice.
