Suzanne Culbreth has been an educator in Alabama for over 30 years. Most recently she has been the Staff Development Specialist at Mountain Brook Junior High School where she had the opportunity to support outstanding teachers as they developed engaging lessons, implemented challenging standards, and developed professionally.

Previously, she taught high school students math and science at Homewood, Opelika, Oak Mountain, and Spain Park. Mrs. Culbreth’s classrooms reflect her discovery philosophy. She believes students should be engaged in mathematics and tangibly experience it beyond working a set of problems successfully. Integration of technology, hands-on activities, and small group learning have added to the excitement for her students and display her passion for student learning.

Mrs. Culbreth achieved National Board Certification in Early Adolescent Math in 2004 and renewed her certification in 2014. She was honored to be named the 2012-13 Alabama Teacher of the Year and remains actively involved in the National Network of State Teachers of the Year. She was also awarded the 2011 Presidential Award for Excellence in Math and Science Teaching by President Obama, affording her the opportunity to represent Alabama nationally in Washington DC. In 1999, Mrs. Culbreth was recognized as a Milken Educator for her achievements in the classroom and future promise to the profession.

Away from the school setting, you will find Mrs. Culbreth busy presenting at conferences and training teachers. She has been sharing her technology classroom tips and tricks at the Alabama Educational Technology Conference since its inception in 1996. She also loves sharing innovative ideas with other math teachers at the Alabama and National Council of Teachers of Mathematics conferences. Mrs. Culbreth traveled throughout the state as a trainer for the Alabama Science Technology Math Initiative and this summer joined the A+ College Ready Laying the Foundation team as a trainer for Pre-Advanced Placement Geometry teachers. And in her spare time, Suzanne participates in church activities with her husband who is a minister, tailgating at an Auburn football game (and loving it win or lose!), or at the beach reading a mystery novel.
