On Earth Day last Thursday Palmer Station personnel once again participated in cleaning up the area around station. Last year members of the station were able to get over to the site of Old Palmer Station, and clear up lots of buried rubbish. This year the snow cover was too great to allow any terrestrial cleaning, but our group participated in cleaning up the area below the pier. We collected rubbish off the pier last year as well, but we found plenty more to collect this year!
Several members of the station came out to the pier and helped pull up the catch bags full of rubbish that the divers found. As you can see from the photos they found lots of old soda bottles and even some kitchen crockery, as well as boat parts, a hammer and even a crow bar! Later on in the day Dan and Bill did another dive to tie a rope around a big tire, and with the help of some heavy machinery it was lifted out of the water.
