Virtual discussion of gender equity gap relating to women of color is March 31

UAB’s Critical Conversations series will host a discussion led by women of color on how to close the gender equity gap in areas like academia and business.The University of Alabama at Birmingham will host a discussion, “From the Classroom to the Boardroom: A Discussion of Equity Led by BIPOC Women,” led by women of color on the impact of gender disparities and how to close the gender equity gap.

The free, virtual discussion, at 5 p.m., Wednesday, March 31, is part of Critical Conversations: Community Wide Civic Dialogue, an ongoing series presented by the UAB Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

Many organizations fall short of inclusive targets to close the gender equity gap. For women of color, the gender disparities are even more glaring. Researchers argue that this results from a combination of historical biases around the intersection of race and gender social norms, including, but not limited to, workplace “motherhood penalties,” sexism and occupational segregation.

Critical Conversations: Community Wide Civic Dialogue is a platform for students, faculty, staff and the public to come together and discuss topics ranging from current events and pop culture to social commentary, and how these issues intersect and affect our daily lives.
