Health care professionals with musical skill are in high demand at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
For the second year, UAB will host Medical Music Day on Thursday, May 24, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. This event will feature live music from UAB “family” members who impact patient care at the hospitals. Patients, other employees and guests can enjoy performances held throughout the North Pavilion, UAB Highlands and The Kirklin Clinic and in Callahan Eye Hospital. Past participants include pharmacists, medical students, physicians, chaplains, administrators and more. Each individual or group is asked to prepare 20 minutes of music. Medical Music Day is presented by UAB’s Institute for Arts in Medicine. This program strives to transform the physical environment and enhance healing and wellness through the arts for patients, families and even clinical staff. Creative interactions take place at the bedside, in group workshops and in public areas through art exhibits and performances. AIM’s artists-in-residence use visual art, crafts, storytelling, dance and movement, guided meditation, theater, and creative writing to deliver the demonstrated benefits of Arts in Medicine. These benefits include reduced stress levels, decreased perceived pain, improved moods and even faster recovery rates. The program is a partnership between UAB Medicine and UAB’s Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center and underscores UAB’s commitment to patient-centered care.
Also happening concurrently with Medical Music Day on May 24 at UAB Hospital is DST Scavenger Hunt Day, presented by Arts in Medicine sponsor DST. Volunteers will work alongside AIM artists-in-residence to offer fun and innovative pop-up art activities, including poetry on demand, a community art canvas, greeting card station, relaxation room and more. Participants who visit seven stations including music performances will receive an Alys Stephens Center ticket voucher.
The UAB Arts in Medicine program is a signature DST Catalyst grant recipient. The hunt will happen throughout second-floor corridors of the main UAB Hospital.
