Goin’ Green New Student Orientation is required for all new students (freshmen, transfer, or nontraditional), so you should plan for it early. Keep in mind that attending an earlier session will mean earlier registration, which means a better chance of getting the classes you want. The size of each session is limited in order to allow your advisor and other campus reps to work closely with you.

What you can expect at Orientation:

  • meet with faculty and academic advisors
  • register for classes
  • discuss academic expectations
  • discover resources designed to help you succeed
  • build a network of campus contacts
  • check out all the opportunities and organizations that can help you get involved on campus
  • meet other students – current and new – and start building new friendships
  • get your UAB e-mail address, your ONE Card, and everything else that makes you one of us

Freshman Orientation

Summer/Fall

Reservations may be made for Summer and Fall semester orientations beginning in early February. The Freshman Enrollment Deposit for summer/fall first-time freshmen is $200. Your deposit must be paid before you can make a reservation for orientation. $150 of the deposit will cover your orientation fee and the other $50 will go toward your student account balance.

The Freshman Enrollment Deposit holds your spot at UAB and pays for you and one family member to attend Goin’ Green New Student Orientation. Each additional family member will cost $20. When you reserve a spot at orientation, you may also choose to pay by credit card for any additional guests or for overnight accommodations.

Overnight accommodations are not provided as part of orientation, but limited on-campus accommodations can be reserved—on a first-come, first-served basis—for $35 per person per night. Students will share rooms with other students, and parents will be housed in their own rooms in a different part of the building. Siblings or guests must be at least 16 years of age in order to take advantage of the on-campus accommodations. If you prefer to stay off-campus, Birmingham has plenty of hotels close to campus that, in some cases, offer a UAB discounted rate.

Spring

Reservations may be made for Spring semester orientation beginning in early October. The nonrefundable fee for Spring semester freshman/transfer student orientation is $50 for each student—this covers your meal, refreshments, program materials, and administrative services. If you choose to bring a parent or guest, there will be an additional $10 charge. Guests will attend Parent & Family Orientation which is run separately from the student’s orientation.

If you are unable to make a reservation for orientation online, please contact the Office of New Student Programs at 205-975-7999 for instructions regarding mailed payments.
