Modern research on the use of botanicals in dietary supplements in treating chronic disease depends heavily on being able to assess the quality of the botanicals/dietary supplements as well as the biochemical and physiological effects in the host. Because of important differences between species, the choice of the animal or cell model has a large impact of the outcome of experiments. Similarly, the physiological material (blood, urine, interstitial fluid, nipple aspirate, prostatic fluid, aqueous humor, etc.) that is selected for analysis for experiment outcomes has to be carefully considered. Analysis of the botanicals/dietary supplements and the physiological materials is crucial. Mass spectrometry has an important role in achieving each of these objectives. It enables careful evaluation of the chemical composition (both qualitative and quantitative) of the dietary supplements. It also can be used to establish how the compounds in the supplements are absorbed into the body and in what chemical forms they circulate. And mass spectrometry is at the forefront of the field of proteomics, where the effect of the botanicals on physiological protein targets - receptors, growth factors, enzymes, structural proteins, etc. - can be assessed by enabling identification of proteins that undergo differential expression, or enabling identification and analysis of any alterations in modifications.

The goal of the 2006 UAB Botanicals Workshop was to introduce investigators, postdocs, and students to concepts and techniques in choice of models, sampling issues, and analysis of the botanical/dietary supplement and physiological materials by mass spectrometry and proteomics.
