Cullman native Elizabeth Miller named as Miss UAB 2022

Headshot of Miss UAB in crown and pageant attire. Elizabeth Miller of Cullman, Alabama, is the new Miss UAB.Elizabeth Miller, a junior from Cullman, Alabama, was crowned Miss University of Alabama at Birmingham 2022 on Nov. 13, when nine candidates competed for the title. 

Miller, majoring in marketing in the Collat School of Business, also won the Talent Award and Spirit Award. She won a total of $2,600 in scholarships. Miller is the daughter of Paul Miller and Letha Miller.

“With this title, I will raise awareness for Hearts for Hunger: Fighting Food Insecurity. I am partnering with Blazer Kitchen to host food drives to help over 4,000 UAB students who have food insecurities,” Miller said. “This is the opportunity of a lifetime, and I am so blessed to have this role on campus.” 

Miller will host Instagram Lives to educate UAB students on how they can help make a difference in food insecurity.   

“I challenge each of you to join me in the fight: feeding one hungry heart at a time,” Miller said.

The Miss UAB Scholarship Competition is an official preliminary to the Miss Alabama and Miss America competitions. The competition, presented by Student Involvement and Leadership, was held in UAB’s Alys Stephens Center.

Sophia Porrill, from Gardendale, Alabama, is the first runner-up. She won the Social Change Award and a total of $1,200 in scholarships. Porrill is a freshman majoring in kinesiology in the School of Education.

Kassidy Nix, from Oxford, Alabama, is the second runner-up. She won a total of $800 in scholarships. Nix is a sophomore majoring in biomedical engineering in the School of Engineering.  

Sunday Owens, from Fairfield, Alabama, won the Civic Engagement Award and received a total of $200 in scholarships. Owens is a senior majoring in general studies with concentration in education and theater. 

Michelle Dai, of Bayou La Batre, Alabama, received the Congeniality Award and secured $100 in scholarships. She is a freshman majoring in biomedical sciences in the School of Health Professions.

“I am honored and ecstatic to serve as Miss UAB 2022.”

Winners were awarded certificates and flowers. Miss UAB 2022 received a gift certificate from Southern Exposure Photography, a year of free workout classes from True40 Fitness Studio – Downtown Birmingham, a candle set from Crave Co., a gift basket from Student Involvement & Leadership, and a Miss UAB bathrobe from the Dressing Room Moms. She will also receive free haircut and color services at Morgan Ashley Salon for the year. The winner received a $50 gift card and all candidates received $15 gift cards from Annabelle’s Southern Boutique.

The Talent Award and Social Change Award are sponsored by Kelly Belcher, Miss UAB 2000. The Spirit Award is sponsored by the Blazer Spirit Council. The Civic Engagement Award is sponsored by Serve205. Photography was provided by Little Brown Photography. 

Since 1983, the Miss UAB Scholarship Competition has been an official preliminary to the Miss Alabama and Miss America competitions. The program offers young women the opportunity to further educational goals through scholarships and personal growth. Students involved in the Miss UAB Scholarship Program gain valuable experience and opportunities to enhance leadership and interviewing skills, talent, poise, and confidence. 

Elizabeth Miller, Miss UAB 2022, will go on to compete in the Miss Alabama Competition in June.
