Fields, MBA about the work of her office and her role as a staff diversity liaison. In our interview, Fields speaks of going beyond Black History Month into our collective thinking.

The Heersink School of Medicine Office for Diversity and Inclusion (Heersink ODI) recently held its virtual Diversity Grand Rounds, featuring Alan T. N Tita, M.D., Ph.D. as the keynote speaker. The annual event, held virtually during Second Look Weekend, was open to current faculty, staff, and potential UAB residents.

Mona Fouad, M.D., senior associate dean of Diversity and Inclusion, joined UAB's Office for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion as associate vice president on July 1. She will maintain her role as senior associate dean while also serving as the associate vice president.

In the last feature of our 2022 Pride Month series, the Department of Medicine has collaborated with the Heersink Office for Diversity and Inclusion to shine a light on how the school is working to expand the perspectives of its medical students through the Health Equity Scholars (HES) program.

In the United States, LGBTQ+ communities face a range of inequities when seeking healthcare services. So, why do these inequities exist? To answer that question and share the knowledge, the UAB Minority Health and Health Disparities Research Center has collaborated on the Heersink School of Medicine Office for Diversity and Inclusion’s Pride Month series. 

For Juneteenth 2022, the Heersink School of Medicine Office for Diversity and Inclusion put together a brief overview of the 157-year-old holiday and lists several ways to celebrate, including cooking traditional Juneteenth recipes, cultivating a reading list, and engaging in local activities.

Last week, the Heersink School of Medicine Office for Diversity and Inclusion shined a light on the transformative work being done to support LGBTQ+ faculty members. As we continue celebrating Pride Month, we shift focus to the ways LGBTQ+ students, trainees, and staff are supported at the school.

In planning sessions for the Office for Diversity and Inclusion, discussions to create a faculty association dedicated to the LGBTQ+ community were in progress. During this time, Rodney Tucker, M.D., reached out to the office to inquire about creating an LGBTQ+ Faculty Association. With his leadership, a partnership formed to bring this idea to life.
