Two UAB School of Medicine women were named among Birmingham Business Journal's 2018 Women to Watch. Lori McMahon, Ph.D., and Alana Nichols, J.D., were recognized at the BBJ Women’s Summit on Friday, Sept. 21, with other outstanding local women who are making a difference in the Birmingham community.

On Friday, Sept. 7, 31 UAB medical students volunteered in partnership with FocusFirst, a vision screening program run by Impact America. The students visited 23 different schools throughout Alabama and screened 520 children for potential vision issues.
Allison Montgomery, a fourth-year medical student pursuing a career in the field of obstetrics and gynecology, was selected as one of ten students nationwide for the inaugural class of the AMA Leadership Development Institute.

Last Friday, a bus carrying 26 UAB residents from the Department of Pediatrics was involved in a severe accident following a retreat at Camp McDowell. The School of Medicine leadership is extremely grateful to everyone who has been involved in the care for its residents and their families during this difficult time.
Created in 1996, the Argus Awards give medical students the chance to honor their mentors, professors, courses and course directors for outstanding service to medical education. Argus Award recipients and nominees were honored at a reception on Friday, Sept. 7 at the UAB Alumni House.
Talmadge E. King, M.D., dean of the UCSF School of Medicine and vice chancellor for medical affairs, will give this year’s Leadership in Academic Medicine Lecture keynote on Friday, Sept. 28 at 8 a.m. in Spain Auditorium. His presentation is titled, “Prepare for Opportunity: A Dean’s Perspective on Leadership.”
UAB has adopted a new tool called Profiles to help faculty with the tracking and reporting of scholarly activities. Additionally, Profiles drives certain data to a public facing website that will showcase UAB faculty in a searchable directory—Scholars@UAB. This companion website is slated to launch on September 14.
