Verification is a process to confirm the data reported on your FAFSA is complete and accurate. Students are selected for verification by the US Department of Education and completing this required process ensures you are considered for the full amount of federal financial aid for which you may be eligible. Approximately 30% of students are selected to complete verification each year. If you are selected for verification, it will appear on your Student Aid Report (SAR) from the US Department of Education and you will be notified by the University through your UAB email address.

Students are encouraged to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool on the FAFSA to minimize the amount of additional information they are required to submit. You can view helpful videos in the Verification Playlist on UAB Financial Aid TV.

What do I need to submit?

  • Log in to BlazerNET, select the “My Financial Aid” tab, and click on “Verification Forms” to view your specific requirements.
  • The Verification Worksheet is the first step to completing the verification process. This worksheet requires students to enter information in regards to their current household, members of the household attending college, and untaxed benefits.
  • The following are common types of documentation that may be required upon completion of the verification worksheet:
    • Tax transcriptObtain your tax transcript here. You can request an online or mailed transcript. You will be required to enter your SSN, date of birth, street address (as it appears on your most recent tax return), and other personal information. Online transcripts are available for download and mailed transcripts arrive within 5-10 days.
    • Verification of Non-filing letterObtain your letter here. Select “Get Transcript Online.” You will be required to enter the non-tax filer's SSN, email address, filing status, account numbers for loan or credit card associated with your name, and mobile phone associated with your name. Students may submit a signed, written statement if the non-filing letter is not available from the IRS.
    • W-2 – Upload a copy of your original W-2 or request a Wage and Income Transcript.
    • Citizenship documentation – will vary depending upon your status. Please refer to your verification forms dashboard for specific requirements.
  • Students are encouraged to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool on the FAFSA to lessen your chances of being selected for verification or to minimize the amount of additional information you are required to submit.
  • If you were not selected for verification, submitting documents that are not required may slow down the award process. You will be notified of any outstanding documents via your UAB email. You can also view these requirements in BlazerNET under “My Financial Aid.”

How do I submit my information and what is the Verification Forms Dashboard?

  • The Verification Forms Dashboard in BlazerNET is the central place to submit all of your verification information. To access the dashboard, log in to BlazerNET > My Financial Aid > Verification Forms
  • You will be asked to confirm your identity on your first visit to the dashboard so that your information can be matched to your FAFSA. Be sure to enter your credentials as they appear on the FAFSA. It is also recommended to opt-in for email and text notifications to receive the most updated information about your verification.
  • If your parent is required to submit information, they will create a separate login and password. Students are required to log in first and complete the verification worksheet. This will initiate the parent portion of your verification.
  • All verification documentation must be uploaded through the dashboard. Emailed and faxed documents will not be accepted. Hand-delivered documents are discouraged.
  • Make sure to include your full name and BlazerID or student number on all documents prior to uploading them through the dashboard.

When will I hear back?

  • Your financial aid award will be processed once all of your requirements are satisfied and reviewed by the Office of Student Financial Aid.
  • We ask that you allow 14-21 business days to review your information once all of your documents have been received.
  • Check BlazerNET and your UAB email often for updates and additional requirements.
  • Opt in to email and text alerts when you log in to the Verification Forms Dashboard.
  • Verification may result in corrections that need to be made to your FAFSA. These changes will be made by the Financial Aid Office on your behalf.

  • Students are encouraged to submit all verification documentation at least 45 days prior to the start of classes. If information is received after this time, the Financial Aid Office cannot guarantee you will receive your financial aid award prior to the first payment deadline.
  • Students are required to submit all requested documents at least one month prior to the end of the semester. Information received after this time may result in you not receiving an award for the respective semester. You are responsible for any charges on your student account if verification is not complete.
