The Nature of the Problem |

Cancer of the pancreas remains one of the most difficult malignancies to diagnose or treat. It is the fourth leading cause of cancer death in the United States, while ranking only ninth in incidence. More than 33,730 Americans will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer this year alone, and 32,300 will die of the disease. Despite new treatments and longer survival rates for patients with other cancers -- such as colon, breast and prostate -- limited diagnostic and treatment approaches have been developed for pancreatic cancer.
