Research interests

My research is devoted to develop an understanding of how various pathogens infect their hosts and cause diseases. Using a variety of biochemical and biophysical tools including single crystal X-ray crystallography we analyze the molecular mechanisms involved in infection and invasion of the host by the pathogen and survival and growth of the pathogen within the host. A thorough understanding of these mechanisms may have direct impact on the development of therapeutic strategies, therapeutic and diagnostic tools. Current research projects in the lab target the following pathogens: Plasmodium, the malaria parasites; Trypanosoma cruzi, the parasite which causes Chagas’ disease; gram positive bacterium Streptococcus pneumonia and Streptococcus agalactiae; smallpox virus (Vaccinia).
