Young Supporters’ Fiesta Ball helps fund young cancer researchers

2014-fiesta-ballThe Young Supporters Board of the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center presents an opportunity to enjoy live music, Mexican food, beer and wine, as well as a silent auction, all while benefiting UAB cancer patient and family services. Fiesta Ball 2014 will be held Thursday, May 1, 6-10 p.m. at B&A Warehouse, 1531 First Ave. South.

Proceeds from the event will be used to fund grants for young cancer researchers at UAB to jump-start their research, with the goal of producing results to compete for larger federal grants.

This year the event is being held in memory of founding Young Supporters Board member Mary Ann Harvard. Harvard lost her battle with cancer in November 2013, at the age of 33. In her memory, the YSB has established the Mary Ann Harvard Memorial Young Investigators Grant.

“Young investigators hold the key to the future of cancer care,” said Edward Partridge, M.D., director of the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center. “They will make the next generation of discoveries — discoveries that will lead to a cure for cancer. It is critical that we provide these bright minds with the resources to begin their research and generate data that can be used to apply for larger grants.”

Tickets can be purchased in advance for $30 at www.uab.edu/2014fiestaball, or for $35 at the door. Valet parking will be available. Self-parking is available on 2nd Avenue South.

Some corporate sponsors include Cadence Bank, Bradley Arant Boult Cummings LLP, Altec Inc., Capstone Development, Protective Life Corporation, Riverside Refractories and Surgical Care Affiliates.
