Associate Professor Marilyn J. Kurata, Ph.D., has been named chairwoman of the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Department of English.

BIRMINGHAM, AL — Associate Professor Marilyn J. Kurata, Ph.D., has been named chairwoman of the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Department of English.

Kurata’s appointment became effective August 1. She succeeds Leland Person, Ph.D., who became chairman of the Department of English and Comparative Literature at the University of Cincinnati.

Kurata is a professor of Victorian literature, specializing in the works of Charles Dickens. She earned her bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Carnegie-Mellon University and her master’s and doctoral degrees in English from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Kurata joined the UAB faculty in 1978. She had been the interim chairwoman of the Department of English since 2000.
