BIRMINGHAM, AL — Loucrecia Collins, Ed.D., a University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) assistant professor of educational leadership, has been appointed to the Alabama Advisory Council for Safe Schools.

Gov. Don Siegelman established the Alabama Advisory Council for Safe Schools in April. The council will develop a pro-active plan for school violence prevention programs that will be implemented by the Department of Children’s Affairs, in conjunction with the state Department of Education’s Prevention and Support Services Division. The programs will be directed toward conflict resolution, character education, anger management, peer mediation and the teaching of tolerance.

Collins teaches in the UAB School of Education. She has received numerous grants for research in the areas of conflict resolution, the teaching of tolerance and literacy. She has successfully introduced a national program called “Don’t Laugh at Me” to Birmingham area schools that is designed to teach children about the effects teasing and bullying can have on others. She also is coordinating a teacher workshop on the “Don’t Laugh at Me” program September 5-6 at UAB.

Collins received her bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees from Mississippi State University. She has been employed at UAB since 2000.
