New Student Orientation Freshman

Intro

Congratulations on your acceptance! Now you’re a Blazer! Kind of...
To really be a Blazer, you have to understand a Blazer, live like a Blazer, maybe even occasionally wear a blazer. All of that—except for the jacket—happens at Goin’ Green New Student Orientation. It’s your most important first step, and all of the programs and information are designed to connect you to us and prepare you for success. You’ll:
  • meet with faculty and academic advisors
  • register for classes
  • discuss academic expectations
  • discover resources designed to help you succeed
  • build a network of campus contacts
  • check out all the opportunities and organizations that can help you get involved on campus
  • meet other students—current and new—and start building new friendships
  • get your UAB e-mail address, your ONE Card, and everything else that makes you one of us

Goin’ Green is required for all entering freshmen, so you should plan for it early. And remember that attending an earlier session will mean earlier registration, which means a better chance of getting the classes you want. The size of each session is limited so your advisor and other campus reps can work closely with you.

Dates

All entering freshman students are required to attend a Goin’ Green orientation and must attend all information and programming sessions scheduled for the day.

The Reservations site for students entering in Spring 2015 will be open in October.

Reservations

The Reservations site for students entering in Spring 2015 will open in October.

Our secure reservations website lets you reserve your spot for orientation and pay your enrollment fee online with Visa, MasterCard, Discover, or American Express. Once you’ve made a reservation, a confirmation will be sent to the e-mail address you provided during the reservation process—be sure to print it out for your records. A final confirmation that includes your parking pass for your orientation session will be e-mailed to your UAB e-mail address 7 days before your session. If you prefer to make a reservation by mail, call (205) 975-7999 for instructions.

Summer/Fall Freshman New Student Orientation
Reservations may be made for Summer and Fall semester orientations beginning in mid-March. The nonrefundable enrollment fee for summer/fall semester freshman orientation is $150 for each student—this holds your spot at UAB and pays for you and one parent to attend Goin’ Green New Student Orientation. Each additional parent or guest will cost $20. When you reserve a spot at orientation, you can pay by check or money order (if you’re making a reservation in person or by mail) or with a credit card (if you’re making a reservation online, which we think will be a lot easier for you).

Overnight accommodations aren’t provided as part of orientation, but limited on-campus accommodations can be reserved—on a first-come, first-served basis—for $35 per person per night. Students will share rooms with other students, and parents will be housed in their own rooms in a different part of the building. Siblings or guests must be at least 16 years of age in order to take advantage of the on-campus accommodations. If you prefer to stay off-campus, Birmingham has plenty of hotels close to campus that would be happy to keep you and even, in some cases, offer a UAB discounted rate.

Spring Freshman New Student Orientation
Reservations may be made for Spring semester orientation beginning in early October. The nonrefundable fee for Spring semester freshman/transfer student orientation is $40 for each student—this covers your meal, refreshments, program materials, and administrative services. If you choose to bring a parent or guest, there will be an additional $10 charge. When you make a reservation for orientation, you can pay by check or money order (if you’re making a reservation in person or by mail) or with a credit card (if you’re making a reservation online, which we think will be a lot easier for you).

If you are unable to make a reservation for orientation online, please contact the Office of New Student Orientation at 205-975-7999 for instructions regarding mailed payments.

Directions/Accommodations

We want you to be able to make it to campus on time and find your designated parking area—we’ve provided directions, a campus map, a parking pass (e-mailed to you to print out and bring with you), and very important instructions for exactly where to park while you’re on campus. Be sure to check your UAB e-mail address seven days before your orientation session begins for last-minute instructions and to print off your parking pass.

On-campus overnight accommodations for Goin’ Green New Student Orientation are only available for freshmen students and their parents attending orientation for the Summer or Fall semester orientation sessions. For those students, a limited number of spaces are available in UAB’s Blazer Hall. Spaces are offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Students will share rooms with other students, and parents will be housed in their own rooms in a different part of the building. Request on-campus housing during the orientation registration process. Siblings or guests must be at least 16 years of age in order to take advantage of on-campus accommodations. If you’re staying on campus, linens, pillows, and towels are provided. You'll need to bring your own toiletries and personal items.

If you’d prefer to stay off-campus, Birmingham has plenty of hotels close to campus that would be happy to keep you. Check out our handy list—some of the hotels offer a UAB discounted rate, some will allow you to use your loyalty or rewards cards, and some will do both. They’re great. When you make your reservation, remember to ask for the UAB discount and any other special offers that may get you the best price.

Checklist

There are a few important steps to take to be completely prepared for orientation. We’ll need to have all your pertinent academic documentation, you’ll need to have your applications in for housing and/or financial aid and/or scholarships, and you’ll need our Discussion Book and plenty of UAB swag (swag optional)—our Orientation checklist will tell you everything you need to get together before orientation and how to get it.
