Caroline and Nic Spears

Nic and I met in Concert Choir in the fall of 2000. He had a mohawk and an earring. After choir, he offered to buy me a soda from the Hideaway Café, which was on the third floor of the Humanities Building. Several choir kids joined us, and we shared a Sprite. Then he walked me home to the University Place apartments across from the Purple Onion. We had several classes together because we were both music majors, so we saw each other a lot. We met in the Lister Hill Library a lot to study. And we frequented the Hideaway Café for meals because we were both pretty broke as college students. We performed in various productions in Opera Workshop and enjoyed singing in multiple choirs together. The performance in the photo is from My Fair Lady’s “I Could Have Danced All Night,” and we even danced a little quickstep onstage that night. His parents used to teach ballroom dancing, so he knew all the moves! We were married in 2003, and the rest is history.
-Caroline is from Mobile, Alabama and came to UAB on a voice scholarship. She earned her Bachelors in Music Performance in 2005, then proceeded to teach voice professionally for a few years, before taking time off to start a family. She currently works for WBHM and serves as Co-director of Music at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in Homewood. Nic was a Music Technology major at UAB. He decided to earn his certification and license as an electrician. He now serves as an Electrical Superintendent for Bright Future Electric, and has been there for 10 years.
