Linda Lucas & Jack Lemons
They literally thought that we were a family and not this odd group of people that worked together, studied together, and interacted.
—Linda Lucas, Ph.D., is from Birmingham, Alabama, and served UAB in many different capacities. She joined the faculty in 1982 as an assistant professor and was named Department of Biomedical Engineering chair in 1995 and School of Engineering dean in 2000. She retired in 2017 as provost, a position she held for five years. In 1989, Lucas was the first to earn UAB’s doctoral degree in biomedical engineering. She also earned an engineering bachelor's degree plus master’s degrees in engineering, mathematics, and education from UAB.
Jack Lemons, Ph.D., is a professor emeritus in the schools of Engineering, Medicine, and Dentistry. He has spent 52 years at UAB, starting as a fellow in 1968. Lemons has mentored and chaired more than 300 student theses and dissertations, leading to more than 600 publications. In 2011 the Department of Biomedical Engineering created the Dr. Jack Lemons Endowed Scholarship in Biomedical Engineering in gratitude for his contributions to graduate education.
