Preterm neonates who are exposed to caffeine within the first seven days after birth have reduced incidence and severity of acute kidney injuries than neonates who did not, according to findings from the Neonatal Kidney Collaborative’s Assessment of Worldwide Acute Kidney Injury Epidemiology in Neonates study, published in JAMA Pediatrics.

Nathaniel Harnett and Kirsten Schoonover are at the front of the pack in a national effort to increase diversity in neuroscience.The two UAB graduate students—and just 10 other predoctorates from underrepresented backgrounds across the United States—won inaugural neuroscience awards last year from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, or NINDS.

On January 19, the School of Medicine assembled nearly 100 faculty representing departments, centers and institutes as well as other campus leaders for its annual AMC21 research retreat. AMC21 is UAB Medicine's strategic plan to become the Preferred Academic Medical Center of the 21st Century.
