School of Medicine commencement set for May 18

27479927667 2f4ac1c48c zThe commencement ceremony for the School of Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham is Saturday, May 18 in Bartow Arena, 617 13th St. South. Doors open at noon, and the ceremony begins at 1 p.m.

Edward Partridge M.D., previous director of UAB’s Comprehensive Cancer Center (now the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center at UAB), will be the featured speaker. Partridge is a gynecological oncologist and is highly recognized for his work to reduce racial and ethnic health disparities, his leadership in reaching underserved populations and his research in cervical and ovarian cancer.

Partridge is a native of Demopolis, AL, and a graduate of the UAB School of Medicine. He completed his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at UAB and joined UAB as an instructor in 1976. He later became director of the UAB Division of Gynecologic Oncology and was named to the Margaret Cameron Spain Chair in Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1999. Partridge also held the Evalina B. Spencer Chair in Oncology and directed the Comprehensive Cancer Center from 2007-2017. He recently retired after an extraordinary 48-year career at UAB.

A special military ceremony will begin for invited guests at 10 a.m. for students entering the Armed Forces. The ceremony will be held inside the Green and Gold Room at Bartow Arena.
