Outman LRRyan Outman has been appointed executive officer for Finance and Administration for the UAB Marnix E. Heersink School of Medicine effective December 1, 2023. He will report to Jason Daniel, senior executive officer for Finance and Administration and vice president, University of Alabama Health Services Foundation (HSF).

Appreciating the evolution of the Dean’s Office and school-wide needs, along with Daniel’s 50/50 split between the Heersink School of Medicine and HSF, Outman, in his new full-time role, will help provide leadership within several key areas. As initially envisioned, he will: serve as advisor to the senior executive officer for Finance and Administration; participate in the recruitment of key school leadership positions; provide leadership for the development of funding, compensation, and resource allocation strategies and policies; act as the primary liaison between the school and Central Administration concerning administrative and financial activities; and monitor the fiscal integrity of revenue generating programs within the school while monitoring the program’s success and providing guidance to program leaders. It is anticipated that Outman’s roles and responsibilities will expand in time as he better appreciates the needs of departmental and division partners.

“It is with great excitement that I take this new step in my professional journey, joining with an outstanding group of individuals in the Heersink School of Medicine’s Dean’s Office as we work together to meet the mission and vision of our school,” Outman said. “I would like to thank my mentors and partners, both present and past. I look forward to working with each of you in this new role. In particular, I would like to thank Dr. Irfan Asif and my outstanding colleagues in the Department of Family and Community Medicine; our collective achievements have helped to prepare me for this new opportunity.”

Originally from Michigan, Outman earned his B.S. in psychology from Western Michigan University and his M.S. in psychology from the University of Georgia. In 2007, he joined UAB as a project coordinator in the Division of Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology and eventually rose to the positions of deputy director of the Center for Outcomes and Effectiveness Research and Education and administrative director of the Center for Clinical and Translational Sciences Training Academy, in which he had administrative responsibility of various multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research grants and training programs with faculty and trainees from multiple UAB schools and departments.

During this time, Outman was elected chair of the UAB UWIRC Council of Center Administrators in 2015 and was named UAB Employee of the Month in April 2015. From 2017-2020, he served as division administrator for the Division of Hematology and Oncology. Since 2020, Outman has served as executive administrator of the Department of Family and Community Medicine. In that role, he has led efforts that have substantially grown the Primary Care Service Line, the UAB Sports and Exercise Medicine Program, and the Comprehensive Urban Underserved and Rural Experience (CU2RE) program for medical students, an $18 million initiative that has significantly increased the number and quality of medical students pursuing primary care at the Heersink School of Medicine.
