eric hunterRenowned researcher Eric Hunter, Ph.D., will be the inaugural speaker for the Susan Roberts Dubay Endowed Lecture to be held 2 p.m. Sept. 1 in Volker Hall Lecture Room B. A reception will follow in the Edge of Chaos.

Hunter, professor of pathology and co-director of Emory University's Center for AIDS Research, will examine “The role of viral fitness in HIV-1 transmission and disease progression.”

Hunter is known for pioneering molecular genetics approaches to examine retrovirus replication. It was in his UAB laboratory, which was recognized internationally for its work in defining the molecular events involved in retroviral assembly, that the late Susan Dubay first came to UAB in 1982.

At UAB, Hunter was the founding director of the Center for AIDS Research and directed it from 1998 to 2004, and he was UAB's Distinguished Faculty Lecturer in 2002.

The Susan Roberts Dubay Memorial Support Fund supports graduate students in UAB's Department of Microbiology through lectures and other educational activities.
