University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) graduate student Tina Harris, 30, of Pell City, has received the 2002 Sigma Tau Delta Convention Writing Awards for poetry and for personal essay.

BIRMINGHAM, AL — University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) graduate student Tina Harris, 30, of Pell City, has received the 2002 Sigma Tau Delta Convention Writing Awards for poetry and for personal essay. Each award came with a $100 cash prize.

Sigma Tau Delta is an international English honor society that confers distinction upon students of the English language and literature in undergraduate, graduate and professional studies. The organization also recognizes the accomplishments of professional writers who have contributed to the fields of language and literature.

Harris was awarded for her collection of poems, “Picturing Hieroglyphs,” and for her personal essay, “In M’am-Maw’s Hands.”

Harris is currently seeking a master’s degree in English at UAB.
