University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) junior David Murphy, 21, of Hoover, Alabama, has been named to a spot on the USA Today 2002 All-USA College Academic Third Team, a prestigious ranking as one of the top 60 college students in the United States.

BIRMINGHAM, AL — University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) junior David Murphy, 21, of Hoover, Alabama, has been named to a spot on the USA Today 2002 All-USA College Academic Third Team, a prestigious ranking as one of the top 60 college students in the United States. USA Today published the winners in a special section on Wednesday, February 27.

Murphy, 21, son of Ken and Roseanne Murphy of Hoover, is a graduate of Shades Mountain Christian School. He is a junior majoring in mechanical engineering. He was named the 2001 Outstanding Undergraduate Engineering Student by the UAB School of Engineering. He also was the 2001 Outstanding Undergraduate Student in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at UAB.

Murphy is a member of the UAB Mechanical Engineering Honors Program, Alpha Lambda Delta Freshman Honor Society, National Society of Collegiate Scholars, University Honors Program and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Murphy has earned Presidential Honors five times and has been on the dean’s list once. Murphy also was the UAB team captain in Spring 2001 for NASA’s Reduced Gravity Student Flight Opportunities Program, which allowed a team of UAB students to conduct scientific experiments in zero gravity aboard NASA’s KC-135 aircraft known as the “Weightless Wonder.”
