BIRMINGHAM, AL — Two University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) marketing students recently competed in the National Collegiate Sales Competition hosted by Baylor University in Waco, Texas. UAB placed second in the team competition and second in the individual competition.

The UAB sales team consists of senior marketing major Jodi Burrus, 26, daughter of Martha Steadman and the late Rev. Norris Steadman of Jasper; and senior marketing major Sandi Hill, 30, daughter of Gary and Margie Hill of Birmingham.

Each contestant was given the task of selling both a product and a service to a buyer for a fictitious company. The contest judges came from corporate sponsors and sales faculty from the participating schools. Each contestant’s scores from the two rounds were combined and the top three competed in the final round.

The UAB team placed second behind Baylor University, which has a professional sales major. Burrus placed second in the individual competition, again to a student from Baylor. UAB marketing professor Lynne Richardson, Ph.D., is the faculty advisor for the team.

“I was delighted to accompany these young women as they very ably represented UAB,” Richardson said. “I was most proud that as the coordinator of the event announced the team awards, he said UAB showed themselves as ‘a force to be reckoned with.’ I couldn’t agree more.”
