As part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) will host and participate in several events that support research, prevention, treatment and awareness of breast cancer. The October events highlight partnerships between UAB medical professionals, patients, cancer survivors, Alabama business owners and nonprofit groups.

 

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - As part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) will host and participate in several events that support research, prevention, treatment and awareness of breast cancer. The October events highlight partnerships between UAB medical professionals, patients, cancer survivors, Alabama business owners and nonprofit groups.

The breast cancer events are as follows:

Thursday, Oct. 1

UAB Go Pink Day asks that all medical professionals and UAB staff wear pink in recognition of breast cancer and the fight against the disease. Refreshments will be available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the North Pavilion second floor atrium.

Saturday, Oct. 10

The North Alabama 18th Annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure will finish in Birmingham's Linn Park. The UAB Medicine logo appears on race-shirt sleeves, and UAB Health System employees will welcome visitors to a UAB information booth near the park main stage. UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center researchers and physicians also will welcome visitors and offer information about research, prevention, treatment options and survivorship programs.

Tuesday, Oct. 13

The second annual Turn Trussville Pink Day will benefit the Joshua White Breast Cancer Research Fund at UAB. The City of Trussville and participating restaurants, businesses, churches and schools will decorate in pink cloth and pink ribbon to help raise awareness and donations for cancer research. Hewitt Trussville High School will host a donor recognition ceremony starting at 8 a.m. featuring Cancer Center representatives and fund organizer Joshua White, the son of a breast cancer survivor.

Friday, Oct. 16

Birmingham-based Jim 'N Nick's Bar-B-Q will partner with UAB breast cancer support group the Angel Squad to celebrate National Mammography Day. Angel Squad members volunteer at many Jim 'N Nick's restaurants across Alabama one day each year to raise awareness about breast cancer. Jim 'N Nick's generously supports the Angel Squad, a patient-support group and partner with the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center.
