Gredda Bailey, the administrative associate in Enrollment Services, is February’s Employee of the Month. Bailey is the go-to person for students, faculty and staff for help ranging from registration to understanding university policies and procedures. Know someone who should be Employee of the Month? When Julie Mummert and her colleagues have a question they can’t answer they know there’s only one place to go.

Gredda Bailey.

“If someone has a question about anything, you usually hear someone say ‘Gredda probably knows, let’s ask her,’” says Mummert, associate director of Undergraduate Admissions.

“I have worked with her for seven years, and she has helped more times than I can count.”

Bailey’s dependability is just part of the reason she has been named February’s Employee of the Month. Her dedication, professionalism and kindness to others are qualities those who work with Bailey appreciate.

“Gredda has the rare quality of being able to see the big picture and attend to the smallest detail,” says Stella Cocoris, assistant vice president for Enrollment Services and university registrar. “In addition to having and being willing to share her broad knowledge of UAB, she is the go-to person in the Registrar’s office for literally hundreds of people. She is valued by faculty and staff for her willingness to assist in any way she can.”

As the administrative associate in Enrollment Services, Bailey’s typical day is never typical, she says.

She is the go-to person for students, faculty and staff for help ranging from registration to understanding university policies and procedures. “I may start out the day with a list of A, B, C and D things I have to do and at 5:30 p.m. I may not have touched one of those things,” she says. “It’s kind of unpredictable, but I like that.”

Bailey says she especially enjoys working with students. All students have to interact with her office. They register for classes, their transcripts are housed there, and if they have problems, they call.

Bailey says she relishes the opportunity to help them with their troubles and says she uses the Golden Rule in her interaction with students and co-workers: Treat others as you would like to be treated.

“I’m a very firm believer that you need to treat people with dignity and respect,” she says. “If you give a smile, you get a smile back.”

Jason Womack, a systems analyst in Student Affairs, says Bailey is an “exceptional” person. “She handles everything that comes her way with courtesy and professionalism,” he says.

Marcy Ludorf, an administrative assistant with Hill University Center operations, says she has relied on Bailey’s knowledge for almost 15 years. But she says it’s her calm under fire that makes Bailey such an important asset to Student Affairs.

“Gredda is one of the most sincere and compassionate people I have ever met,” Ludorf says. “She treats all students with the same fairness and concern.”
