UAB is home to The World Games Athletes' Village, housing more than 4,500 athletes, trainers, coaches, and other support staff in our residence halls.

Restricted Areas

To ensure the safety of our campus community and guests, a limited number of buildings, parking areas, and streets will be restricted during The World Games, starting on July 2 through July 17, the day of the closing ceremony at Protective Stadium. These areas will not be accessible to the public and will be secured by law enforcement agencies. Only athletes, coaches, designated staff, and pre-approved vendors will be issued security credentials that will give them access.

Note that details of road closures and other campus impacts may change in the coming weeks. Continue to read your official UAB communications, including eReporter and GreenMail, for more information.

Patient Care

UAB Medicine, UAB Callahan Eye, UAB Eye Care, and UAB Dentistry will continue with normal operations during The World Games, including inpatient, outpatient, and emergency services at all facilities. Patients traveling to UAB for medical, optometric, or dental care should refer to the Road Closures map and plan their routes accordingly. With the increased number of visitors to our city patients should expect travel times to be impacted.

University Boulevard will have both west-bound lanes open but only one east-bound lane open. Likewise, some streets and avenues from 10th Avenue to the south to 17th Street to the east will be closed, impacting traffic flow to UAB Hospital-Highlands and some clinics in the Medical District.

Patients and visitors traveling to the Medical District from Red Mountain Expressway should not be impacted by road closures. Those traveling east on University Boulevard from I-65 should turn left on 13th street and right and 6th avenue to access the Medical District.
