UAB Cancer Center to host alternative therapies class

“Complementary and Alternative Therapies: What You (And Your Doctor) Don’t Know Can Hurt You” to be held Jan. 24

The UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center, as part of its Living with Cancer educational and support services program, will host a class on the benefits and drawbacks of complementary therapies. “Complementary and Alternative Therapies: What You (And Your Doctor) Don’t Know Can Hurt You,” a free event, will be held 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013, in the Comprehensive Cancer Center Room 2532, 1802 6th Ave. South.

Carolina Salvador, M.D., assistant professor in the UAB Division of Hematology and Oncology, will address the scientific evidence or lack thereof behind some complementary health practices. She will discuss how some dietary supplements can interfere with standard cancer treatments, as well as the need for coordinated and safe care to ensure all aspects of a patient’s cancer care work together.

Lunch will be provided, and registration is recommended. To register or learn more, contact Teri Hoenemeyer at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
