Hosted by UAB Artist-in-Residence Eric Essix, “The Essentials” combines education and entertainment in one stage show that spotlights an internationally acclaimed jazz artist alongside Birmingham’s talented jazz musicians.
The lute songs of John Dowland are famous, but the texts are rarely understood. This multimedia lecture recital will explore the intrigue surrounding the songs.
Free one-hour concerts will take place every first Thursday, and will kick off Sept. 4 in the University Hospital atrium.
From free student, alumni and faculty recitals to guest artist performances, the UAB Department of Music offers something for every taste.

The choir performed 20 concerts in six countries and won medals in all three categories they participated in at the games, held in Latvia.

With the audience seated within a 3-D “ambisonic” sound system, EarFilms creates a playground for the human imagination; each audience member is blindfolded to eliminate visual stimuli and focus the senses.
The nearly 60-strong UAB Concert Choir will represent the USA in the “Olympics of choirs,” the World Choir Games in Latvia.
Each season, the Alys Stephens Center searches for innovative artists, curates unique events and enlists talented musicians to create memorable experiences for Birmingham audiences.
This season see Lalah Hathaway and Ruben Studdard, Boz Scaggs, Duquette Johnston, the Hendrix Experience, Keb’ Mo’, Mary Mary, Trombone Shorty, Kirk Whalum, Julian Lage and Chris Eldridge, and more.
The free, family-friendly festival will showcase the best of Birmingham music, merchants and vendors from 5-10 p.m. outdoors at the ASC.
