BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) assistant professor of philosophy and economics Erik Angner, Ph.D., is among the winners of the Intercollegiate Studies Institute (ISI) Templeton Enterprise Awards.
Angner, who teaches philosophy in the UAB College of Arts and Sciences and economics in the UAB School of Business, won third prize for his 2007 book Hayek and Natural Law, on the life and work of the renowned 20th century economist Friedrich A. Hayek. The award came with a $2,500 cash prize.
Hayek, winner of the 1974 Nobel Prize in economics, often has been described as one of the greatest economists and political theorists of the 20th century.
"He is best known for his analysis of the manner in which the price system serves to communicate information and for his defense of individual freedom as a precondition for prosperity," Angner said.
The ISI Templeton Enterprise Awards are given annually to the best books and articles published in the previous year about the culture of enterprise. The awards are designed to encourage young scholars under the age of 40 to explore and illuminate the process by which economics and culture are related throughout the world. Angner was honored this year at an awards dinner at the Harvard Club in New York City April 6.
