Mona Fouad, M.D., MPH, senior associate dean for Diversity and Inclusion in the Heersink School of Medicine and director of the Minority Health and Health Equity Research Center, has been elected to the National Institutes of Health’s Advisory Committee to the Director (ACD) Working Group on Diversity.

In the United States, LGBTQ+ communities face a range of inequities when seeking healthcare services. So, why do these inequities exist? To answer that question and share the knowledge, the UAB Minority Health and Health Disparities Research Center has collaborated on the Heersink School of Medicine Office for Diversity and Inclusion’s Pride Month series. 

On Saturday Sept. 29, The Harbert Center was transformed into a 1920s nightclub as the UAB Minority Health & Health Disparities Research Center (MHRC) Young Professionals Board presented Harlem in the ‘Ham, an event that benefiited Healthy Happy Kids.
Birmingham REACH for Better Health, an initiative of the UAB Minority Health and Health Disparities Research Center (MHRC), was developed in response to this burgeoning health crisis, a crisis driven in part by social and economic disparities.
Fouad has worked to establish the validity of health disparities as a national scientific research priority.
Harlem in the ’Ham benefits the Healthy Happy Kids program sponsored by the UAB Minority Health and Health Disparities Research Center.
The UAB Health Disparities Research Symposium highlights the health disparities work of undergraduate, graduate, faculty and community investigators in basic science, clinical research, behavioral and social science, and community-based research.
UAB-led Research to appear in American Journal of Preventive Medicine suggests that linking electronic health records with social determinants of health and environmental measures could help researchers understand the causes of obesity and chronic disease and suggest strategies for addressing the disparities in these conditions.
