Six University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) students will vie for top prizes in a speech competition organized by the UAB Department of Communication Studies Wednesday, Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. in the UAB Mary Culp Hulsey Recital Hall.

 

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Six University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) students will vie for top prizes in a speech competition organized by the UAB Department of Communication Studies Wednesday, Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. in the UAB Mary Culp Hulsey Recital Hall, 950 13th St. South. The event is free and open to the public.

Students in the 17 Department of Communication Studies public-speaking classes will select two representatives to compete in a preliminary competition set for Tuesday, Oct. 27. The top six winners will compete in the final round Oct. 28.

During the competition, students will deliver the five- to six-minute informative speeches that they first presented in class. First prize will be a $500 scholarship; second prize, a $300 scholarship; and third prize, a $200 scholarship.

Refreshments will be served afterward. The guest speaker for the event will be Michael Sznajderman, senior communications strategist at Alabama Power Co.
