The Department of Communication Studies is concerned with human interaction and communication in all its forms. Students in the department may major in Communication Management or Mass Communication. The major in Communication Management or Mass Communication (with specializations in broadcasting, journalism, or public relations).

The Communication Management major is designed for students interested in the general principles of communication from interpersonal relationships to the theory and practice of public dialogue. A minor is also available in Communication Management.

The mass communication major allows students to specialize in journalism, broadcasting, or public relations. Minors are available in each of the majors offered by the department. Students may pursue a double major in the degree concentrations or minor in the other. A minor is required for a degree from this department.

The Department offers a number of scholarships and award for outstanding majors.  Please check the the Scholarships link for instructions in how to apply.

Students interested in studying communication should consult the department chair as well as the requirements set by the School of Arts and Humanities.

NEW GRADUATE STUDENT ASSOCIATION

 

The Graduate Society of Communication Scholars invites all communication graduate students to be a part of this new organization.  Our first meetings will be Wednesday, July 2 and Wednesday, July 9 at 4:30 P.M. in Heritage Hall, room 342.  The organization is open to all communication graduate students who are interested in enriching their coursework through collaborative publication efforts, conference attendance, and scholarly interaction with other graduate students.  If you have further questions, please contact Katie Haas (haas@uab.edu).  Hope to see you there!
