Bej seeks partners in extremophile research
Bej has been studying the biodiversity of extremophiles to better understand how these organisms survive in such extreme environments and to see ifthey possess the key to the treatment and prevention of skin cancer.

UAB wins grant for Advanced Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Center
UAB will establish a state-of-the-art 800 MHz nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) facility with a grant of $2 million from the National Center for Research Resources (NCRR), part of the National Institutes of Health.

Physicist Sergey Mirov wins 2009 Ireland Award for Scholarly Distinction
UAB physicist Sergey Mirov, Ph.D., has won the 2009 Carolyn P. and Charles W. Ireland Prize for Scholarly Distinction. A dinner and lecture preceded by cocktails will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 5 at The Club.

UAB prepares for environmental audit
UAB is participating in a new cooperative program with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency that allows participating schools in the Southeast to inspect each other using trained auditors, self-report any violations found and submit a plan to correct the problems to the EPA.
