Anyone who has faced the challenge of caring for an older adult – a parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle or spouse – understands the need to know how to keep that loved one mentally sharp, physically mobile, safe and independent for as long as possible. Dancing with the Silver Stars II, a high-energy salute to senior citizens, will help fund Center for Aging research programs and patient care programs.

Dancing with the Silver Stars II pairs local corporate and civic leaders with area professional dancers for a spirited celebration of aging.

Local celebrity dancers are:

Frank Falkenburg, Managing Director, NBC Securities, Inc.
Dr. Harold Jones, Dean, UAB School of Health Professions
Dr. Emily Omura, Professor Emerita, UAB Department of Dermatology
Barbara O’Neal, Community Volunteer

Jane Kaul Wilson, Community Volunteer

Fabian and Jackie Sanchez, owners of the local Fred Astaire Dance Studio in Hoover, will dance with of each of the local star dancers. Fabian is an ABC network Dancing with the Stars veteran who competed with actress Marlee Matlin in the show’s sixth season.

In addition to the star-studded dance routines by the local celebrity dancers, attendees will enjoy special entertainment by the Birmingham Sugar Babies, a dancing group of ladies ranging in age from 53 to 72 years young. The event also includes a cocktail reception and dinner.

The event emcees are Brenda Ladun with ABC 33/40 and Shelley Stewart with o2ideas.

The planning committee includes:

Lydia Cheney
Ronne M. Hess

The 2010 Dancing with the Silver Stars event raised more than $80,000 to support specific program needs including assistive hearing devices for geriatric patients seen by UAB doctors, expansion of the Alzheimer Family Program for caregivers, undergraduate and graduate scholarships for students pursuing mentored research in aging, faculty training in geriatrics and new faculty recruitment. Support for this year’s event will make a tremendous impact on UAB’s efforts to help older adults – and the people who care for them – maintain health, function and well-being.
