The Essentials is a new, innovative Alys Stephens Center series devoted to honoring the rich history of jazz music and bringing the best artists in contemporary jazz to Birmingham.
The concert at Southside Baptist Church will feature music from a variety of styles and time periods, including works by Mendelssohn, Gretchaninoff, Mawby, Hogan and more.

Phillips will perform “A Southern Prelude,” an original work for solo piano by UAB Associate Professor William Price in a free concert at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 9.
As artist-in-residence, he will continue to represent UAB as an ambassador for the arts and serve as a mentor to young people who have an interest in the arts.
