Odyssey at the Odess: UAB Music Technology students in concert

This Computer Music Ensemble spring show is focused on the “Odyssey” theme, and each student-composer created music that invokes the feelings and emotions of an epic quest.

computer music sThe University of Alabama at Birmingham Computer Music Ensemble, under the direction of Assistant Professor of Music Scott L. Phillips, Ph.D., will perform live in concert in “Odyssey at the Odess” on Friday, April 11, and Saturday, April 12. The concerts are set for 7:30 p.m. each night in the Odess Theatre of UAB’s Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center, 1200 10th Ave. South. Both concerts will feature the group as they perform original electronic and electroacoustic music.

Each semester, the UAB Computer Music Ensemble presents a live concert on the UAB campus to perform their original music. This spring’s show is focused around the “Odyssey” theme, and each student-composer has created music that invokes the feelings and emotions of an epic quest.  The play on words with the Odess Theatre inspired the theme, Phillips says.

“The Odess ‘black box’ Theatre allows the audience to sit in chairs on the floor around our performers,” Phillips said. “It helps the audience be very involved in the music. One piece in the concert will even allow audience members to play a live video game while the ensemble provides musical elements.”

The concert in the Odess has an added bonus — collaboration with the UAB Department of Theatre.

“We get to benefit from the talent and expertise of the faculty and staff of UAB’s award-winning Theatre Department,” Phillips said. “Their contributions to our production design and lighting really bring the show to life. This concert will be the third time the two departments have collaborated on a CME show. Each show is a unique and exciting musical adventure.”

Tickets are $5 and can be purchased through the ASC box office at 205-975-2787 or at www.alysstephens.org. For more information, call the UAB Department of Music at 205-934-7376 or visit online at www.uab.edu/cas/music.
