The university had a club team in 1989, but in 1991 began playing as a NCAA Division III team. Now, after a two-year hiatus, UAB Football has returned to Birmingham, defeating Alabama A&M in its season opener 38-7 before a record crowd that exceeded 45,000 in Legion Field.
