Will Brooks, Ph.D., has been named assistant dean for Preclinical Education in the UAB Heersink School of Medicine, a new position created to support the delivery of active and engaging instruction in the preclinical modules.
Third-year medical student Abigail Kraus was recently awarded the 2021 AOA Carolyn L. Kuckein Student Research Fellowship. The award will provide her a $5,000 stipend to support her while she conducts her research project titled “Defining the role of endothelin-1 in hyperoxia-induced kidney damage.”

Christina Grabowski, Ph.D., associate dean for Admissions and Enrollment Management, recently assumed the role of chair of the Association of American Medical Colleges Southern Group on Student Affairs.

F. Shawn Galin, Ph.D., professor of Medicine in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care Medicine and director of the Office of Standardized Patient Education at UAB, has been named president-elect of the Association of Standardized Patient Educators, the international organization of educators dedicated to human simulation.

The UAB School of Medicine hosted more than 160 medical students, faculty, and administrators from 40 medical schools across the United States and Mexico at the Learning Communities Institute’s 14th annual conference Sept. 15-17.
Alice R. Goepfert, M.D., professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology’s Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine, has been named associate dean for Graduate Medical Education in the School of Medicine and Designated Institutional Official for UAB Hospital.
Winners of the 2017 Argus Awards were announced at the ceremony held Friday, Sept. 8. The awards are given each year by medical students to honor their professors and course directors for excellence in medical education.
