A gospel and jazz concert and an alumni tour to Canada are set for the UAB Gospel Choir, in continued celebration of the choir’s 20th anniversary.
The UAB Piano Series, presented by the College of Arts and Sciences’ Department of Music, brings the world’s finest pianists to Birmingham. Takács will perform an all-Beethoven program.
The duo will premiere “Sonata: Folie à Deux” by UAB Associate Professor of Music William Price, as well as “Circling” for two saxophones by David Froom.
Clarinetists of all ages and abilities are invited. On offer will be workshops, master classes, clarinet choir, recitals, clinics, presentations and performances by some of the nation’s finest clarinetists.
The all-female chamber group, best known for presenting new works in diverse settings, is set to perform works by Ned Rorem, Evan K. Chambers and Joan Tower.

Kasman will perform Rachmaninoff and Shostakovich trios Jan. 26, and give preconcert talks prior to performances Feb. 5-6 as part of “Russian Moods.”

Kasman, professor of piano, will be a soloist with Saratov Philharmonic Orchestra in the performance of Nikolai Medtner’s Piano Concerto No. 2 op. 50 on Sunday, Dec. 6.

The UAB Jazz Ensemble carries on Birmingham’s long jazz tradition through practice and performance. Bandleader and Assistant Professor Steven Roberts, DMA, talks about the key attributes of a jazz musician and the evolution of the award-winning ensemble.
Featured will be the UAB Concert Choir and Chamber Singers, the UAB Trumpet Ensemble, and choir students from John Carroll, Calera, Thompson and Hueytown high schools.
Sophomore Eamon Griffith of Birmingham won first place in the Young Artist category, while junior Aleksandra Kasman of Vestavia Hills was named the alternate winner.
“Chamber Music @ AEIVA” will begin at 5 p.m. and offer gallery viewing and a reception followed by a 30-minute concert at 5:30 p.m. featuring student and faculty performers.
More than 125 voices of current and past UAB Gospel Choir members from throughout the state and as far away as Tennessee, Georgia, California, Illinois and Ohio will perform.

Kasman, 20, of Vestavia Hills, was selected from applications from across the country for her performance of Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 1.
George Stewart’s Sept. 24 lunchtime lecture will focus on the music and history of the black gospel quartet and its influence on other genres.
On offer are free recitals by students and faculty, guest artist performances and master classes, and a new art and music event, plus Gospel Choir and Christmas at the Alys concerts.
