AMSTI STAFF

Welcome to the UAB-AMSTI Home Page!

AMSTI was designed by a Blue Ribbon Committee comprised of lead teachers, administrators, higher education representatives and business leaders. The Initiative was based on research of best practices for math and science and strongly supports National and State standards.

AMSTI provides three basic services to help students learn by DOING math and science: 1. Comprehensive PD through two, two- week Summer Institutes; 2. All of the equipment and materials needed to deliver high-quality, activity based instruction, and; 3. On-site, regular support providing mentoring and follow-up assistance to individual teachers by our math and science specialists.

During Summer Institutes we target: deepening content knowledge, instructional strategies, and active participation by the teachers as student learners. We also cover various ways of assessing student performance. Teachers receive grade and subject specific training by trainers certified by the State Department. The trainers model instruction in the same manner in which the teachers are encouraged to teach.
