In order to enroll in any of the UAB School of Education undergraduate programs, please review the steps below. Be sure to meet with your advisor during orientation, especially if you wish to pursue one of our teacher certification programs. Whether you want to shape future generations as a teacher, design strategic interventions as a community health professional, or pursue graduate studies, the UAB School of Education has a program for you.

Step 1: Apply for admission to UAB

Applying to UAB is the first step to any undergraduate program in the UAB School of Education. Learn about admission requirements and deadlines and complete your application.

Step 2: Declare your major

Once you have been admitted to UAB, you may declare your major through UAB’s student information portal, BlazerNet.

Step 3: Attend orientation

During orientation, School of Education advisors will review our various programs, explain how to register for courses, offer tips for making the most of your time at UAB, and answer any questions you may have

Step 4: Meet with your advisor

You will be assigned a School of Education advisor who will guide you through your program of study. Your advisor will assist you in the selection of your courses and help you to identify program and degree requirements.

Admission to the Teacher Education Program

If you wish to pursue Teacher Certification, you must apply and be admitted to the UAB Teacher Education Program (TEP). Students who have completed all necessary prerequisites, typically in their sophomore or junior year, are eligible to apply. Be sure to discuss with your School of Education advisor the TEP application requirements; e.g., specific courses, minimum GPA, testing, and application dates.

Early Childhood and Elementary Education: Admission Requirements

Course and GPA Requirements

  • Completion of the following Professional Studies courses with a minimum GPA of 2.75 or higher:
    • EDU 200
    • HPE 200
    • EDF 362
    • EPR363
    • ECY300
    • EEC300
    • EEC 301
    Any course with a grade below “C” must be retaken. Only one repeated course will be forgiven. All other repeated courses will be used when calculating the GPA for these courses.
  • 41 semester hours in the core curriculum, all courses in General Studies, and seven semester hours in pre-professional/major courses
  • Minimum core GPA of 2.5 (2.75 beginning Spring 2017)
  • Minimum higher education GPA of 2.75 in accordance with UAB Course Repeat Policy
  • Grade of at least one “B” and one “C” in EH 101 and EH 102
  • Grade of “C” or higher in CM 101
  • Completion of one core curriculum mathematics course: MA 105, 106, 107, 109, 110, 125, 126, 227, 252, or 260
  • Grade of “C” or higher in MA 313

Testing Requirements and Background Clearance

  • Score of “Pass” on all three parts of the AECTP Basic Skills Assessment
  • Background check status shown as “Cleared” on the ALSDE Certification Portal
  • Passing score on all sections of Praxis II: Elementary Multiple Subjects (#5001) Passing scores: Reading = 154+; MA=143+; Social Studies= 142+; Science= 144+
  • Passing score on Praxis: Early Childhood Content Knowledge (#5025 - passing score 150+)

Other Requirements

  • Evidence of writing proficiency as documented by a passing score on the writing sample EDU 200 or in EDU 210 with a “B” or higher
  • Passing score on spontaneous speaking sample in TEP interview
  • Score of “pass” on Pre-TEP Portfolio as reviewed by faculty
  • Score of “pass” on TEP interview as reviewed by faculty
  • Evidence of the dispositions needed to be a successful teacher

Music Education: Admission Requirements

Course and GPA Requirements

  • Grade of C or higher in EDU 200
  • Completion of a minimum of 24 semester hours in the Core Curriculum and seven semester hours in pre-professional/major courses. With the core, these requirements must be satisfied: ENG 101/102, CM 101, Math 110 or 105 (or above), and a Science with Lab (AST, BY, CH, PH, ENV, PHS).
  • Minimum GPA of 2.50 in Core Curriculum Requirements (Areas I-IV) in accordance with UAB Course Repeat Policy (the minimum GPA will be raised to 2.75 beginning Fall 2016)
  • Minimum higher education GPA of 2.50 in accordance with UAB Course Repeat Policy (the minimum GPA will be raised to 2.75 beginning Fall 2016)
  • Grade of at least one “B” and one “C” in EH 101 and EH102
  • Grade of “C” or higher in CM 101

Testing Requirements and Background Clearance

  • A score of “Pass” on all three parts of the AECTP Basic Skills Assessment
  • Background check status shown as “Cleared” on the ALSDE Certification Portal

Other Requirements

  • Successful completion of Music Education Sophomore Evaluation, held each spring semester
  • Evidence of writing proficiency as documented by passing score on spontaneous writing sample in EDU 200 or Sophomore Music Education writing sample or "B" or higher in EDU 210
