New Collaborative Initiatives between Mervyn Sterne and Lister Hill Libraries
- Review of Circulation Policies and Procedures (beginning December 2013)
Our charge was to examine circulation policies and procedures of the two libraries and identify areas where services to the campus community could be improved by harmonizing policies.
The committee created a chart of circulation categories (services and functions: such as borrowing privileges by patron groups and length of check out periods) which was distributed to all library staff members. Subsequently the committee sent the comparison chart of circulation categories with our recommendations to all library staff members requesting comments. The comments/suggestions were incorporated into the Circulation Working Group Report (draft) of the committee. A number of the suggestions were adopted by the committee and are now part of the committee’s recommendations. The committee also identified circulation policies from other libraries in the state or region which were helpful when considering changes to our policies. Many of the recommendations for harmonizing the circulation policies were addressed. It should be stressed that the report is a work-in-progress.
- Review of Interlibrary Loan Policies and Procedures (beginning December 2013)
The charge of the ILL Working Group is to examine ILL policies and procedures of the two UAB libraries and identify areas where services to the campus community could be improved by harmonizing policies, procedures and workflows.
As a part of the committee’s review, a (draft) discussion chart showing the comparison of UAB Libraries’ current ILL policies, the background rationale of the current policies, and comparisons showing how other academic and health sciences libraries have developed similar policies has been created. The ILL policies of other select academic and health sciences libraries has been compiled as a supplement to the (draft) discussion chart.
The (draft) discussion chart and supporting documentation has been sent to all library staff for review and comment. The ILL working group will provide updates to the (draft) discussion chart as our review continues.
