Dr. Sabine Huke was born April 5, 1970 in Gronau, Germany to Guenther and Helga Huke. She received her PhD in Biochemistry in 2000 from the Westfaelische-Wilhelms-Universitaet in Muenster, Germany. She completed two post-doctoral fellowships in the U.S. from Ohio State University (2000-2004), and Loyola University in Chicago (2004-2008). She joined the Division of Clinical Pharmacology at Vanderbilt University in 2008 as an assistant professor.
In 2015, Dr. Huke was recruited to UAB as an associate professor in the Division of Cardiovascular Disease. Over her career, Dr. Huke distinguished herself as a nationally recognized researcher investigating the cellular and molecular basis of cardiac arrhythmias in heart disease, a highly effective teacher and mentor, a devoted colleague, and tireless collaborator. Her work was recognized and supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the American Heart Association, and strongly impacted the cardiovascular scientific community. She served as a member of the Electrical Signaling, Ion Transport, and Arrhythmias Study Section of the NIH. Her work has been published in a number of high-impact journals, including Circulation Research and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the USA.
Dr. Huke mentored students, fellows, and other trainees on a regular basis at the research bench, in small groups, and during lectures, seminars and workshops. In doing so, she provided a vitally important service to the UAB community. In her leisure time, she was an avid equestrian and regularly tended to her three horses. Dr. Huke is survived by her parents Guenther and Helga Huke, 2 brothers Michael Huke, Guenther Huke, sister Petra (Huke) Schmidt and 5 nieces.
In recognition of Dr. Huke’s life and career, we established the Sabine Huke, PhD, Endowed Fund for Cardiovascular Research at UAB. This fund will support research and discovery in cardiovascular science in honor of Dr. Huke. Contributions in memory of Dr. Huke may be made to this fund by mail to:
